Bachelor of Science, Dietetics

Dietetics is one of four undergraduate majors in the Department of Health, Nutrition, and Food Sciences. The program offers students a unique introduction to sports and clinical nutrition.

Students majoring in dietetics may earn a DPD (Didactic Program in Dietetics) Verification Statement (which is required to apply for a dietetic internship and registered dietitian exam.) The DPD is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

This major gives students an in-depth understanding of various scientific aspects of nutrition and food. Students study nutrient functions and requirements, metabolism, food quality and safety, the composition and chemical properties of foods, and changes in foods caused by processing, storage and preparation. Besides studying nutrition, food science, biology and microbiology, majors must take physics and complete extensive coursework in organic and analytical chemistry.
